Encountering dolphins and manatees during a guided eco kayak tour in the Bonita Springs / Big Hickory area of Florida is indeed a thrilling possibility. However, it's essential to recognize that wildlife sightings are inherently unpredictable and influenced by various factors. That being said, our choice of using Hobie Kayaks significantly enhances the likelihood of finding and observing these captivating marine creatures.

  1. Abundance of Marine Life: The Gulf Coast of Florida, including the Bonita Springs / Big Hickory area, is rich in marine life. Dolphins are known to inhabit these coastal waters, and their playful nature often leads them to venture close to kayak routes.

  2. Active Coastal Habitats: Dolphins are frequently found in active coastal habitats, and the Big Hickory Island region, with its diverse ecosystems and estuaries, provides an attractive environment for these intelligent creatures.

  3. Tour Routes: Guided kayak tours are designed to navigate through areas known for wildlife activity. Knowledgeable guides often choose routes with a higher likelihood of encountering dolphins, increasing the chances of a memorable sighting.

    1. Dolphins, being wild animals, exhibit natural behaviors that may not always coincide with the presence of kayak tours. They may be hunting, resting, or simply in a different area during your tour. Dolphins can travel 40-50 miles a day!
    2. Rough Weather: High winds or extremely low tides can lower the odds of seeing a dolphin! However, here at Mike’s Coastal Expeditions we only launch when the best experience is guaranteed!
    1. Manatees are drawn to warm waters. The prime months for Manatees are from April-October. These months are the mating season for Manatees on the coastal waters of Florida!
    2. Areas that support sea grass! Manatees eat a lot of sea grass, so areas that are abundant with sea grass often have manatees feeding!
    1. Manatees are less abundant on the Coast during the colder Months of Florida. The water temp is too cool for them and as a result it poses serious health risk if they stay in cold water for too long. These Months include December thru February when the water temps in the gulf are their coldest.
    2. Rough weather: High winds or extremely low tides can lower the odds of seeing a Manatee.  However, here at Mike’s Coastal Expeditions we only launch when the best experience is guaranteed!
  1. Silent Propulsion: Hobie Kayaks are equipped with the MirageDrive pedal system, providing silent and hands-free propulsion. This minimizes disturbance in the water, allowing us to approach dolphins and manatees without causing unnecessary stress.

  2. Maneuverability: The exceptional maneuverability of Hobie Kayaks enables us to navigate through intricate waterways, including mangrove tunnels and estuaries, where wildlife often thrives. This flexibility enhances our ability to reach areas that are prime habitats for dolphins and manatees.

  3. Extended Reach: Hobie Kayaks allow us to cover more ground efficiently. With the Mirage Pedal Drive system, we can explore a larger area during our guided tours, increasing the chances of encountering wildlife, especially in the diverse coastal environments around Big Hickory Island.

While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, our commitment to using Hobie Kayaks reflects our dedication to providing the best possible opportunities for encountering dolphins and manatees. The advanced features of these kayaks not only respect the natural behaviors of the animals but also enable us to offer a more immersive and enjoyable experience for our tour participants. Join us for a guided eco kayak tour where the combination of technology and expertise maximizes the potential for unforgettable wildlife encounters in the stunning waters of Southwest Florida.

While we provide ice code bottled water, ice, coolers, and dry bags, there are some essentials you should bring.

Proper footwear is essential, there will be several opportunities to leave your kayak to explore or swim. It's imperative to have the proper footwear to protect your feet from sharp objects like sea shells or possibly oyster shells etc.

n the Southwest Florida (SWFL) environment, having the right gear is crucial for a safe and enjoyable kayaking experience. Here's why sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, and proper attire are essential:

  1. Sun Protection: SWFL boasts abundant sunshine, making sunglasses and a hat crucial. Protect your eyes from glare and harmful UV rays with sunglasses. A hat shields your face and neck, reducing the risk of sunburn and heat-related discomfort.
  2. Sunscreen for Skin Protection: The Florida sun can be intense, and prolonged exposure can lead to sunburn. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to exposed skin, including the face, arms, and legs. Reapply as needed to ensure continuous protection during your kayaking adventure.
  3. Proper Attire for Comfort: Wear lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing to stay cool and comfortable. Quick-drying fabrics are ideal, as they help manage perspiration. Consider clothing that provides coverage to minimize direct sun exposure while allowing ease of movement.
  4. Prevention of Dehydration: Paddling under the sun can lead to dehydration. Bring a reusable water bottle and stay hydrated throughout your kayaking adventure. Proper hydration ensures you maintain energy levels and enjoy a more comfortable experience.
  5. Adaptability to Changing Conditions: SWFL weather can be unpredictable. Dressing in layers allows you to adapt to changing conditions. Bring a light jacket or a waterproof layer in case of unexpected rain or wind.

By prioritizing sun protection, wearing appropriate attire, and staying hydrated, you'll enhance your overall comfort and safety during a kayaking excursion in the SWFL environment. These considerations ensure you can fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the surroundings without compromising your well-being.

Our guided tours are for all abilities, except when noted. Below are a few things to know and consider.

Alligators, known for their presence in freshwater habitats, are typically not found in saltwater environments. This preference is rooted in their physiological adaptations and behavior. Unlike their close relatives, crocodiles, which have specialized salt glands to excrete excess salt, alligators lack this adaptation.

Alligators primarily inhabit freshwater ecosystems such as rivers, lakes, and swamps, where they thrive in the balance of the water's salinity. The salt concentration in saltwater environments is generally beyond their tolerance level, making it inhospitable for prolonged survival. As a result, encountering alligators in saltwater is uncommon, and they are more commonly associated with the serene, freshwater landscapes of the Southern United States.

While alligators avoid saltwater, it's crucial to be mindful of their potential presence in freshwater habitats, especially when exploring coastal areas and estuaries where freshwater meets the sea. Always exercise caution and respect their natural habitats to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in regions where alligators may reside.

At Mike's Coastal Expeditions, your safety and enjoyment are our top priorities. In the event of inclement weather, we may need to cancel or reschedule tours for your well-being. While we strive to provide the best experience possible, factors like strong winds, adverse currents, or severe weather conditions can impact the safety of our tours.

For rental customers, our team will provide guidance and advice on currents, wind patterns, and weather conditions before you embark on your adventure. We want to ensure you have the information needed to make informed decisions about your water activities. Your safety is paramount, and our experienced guides are here to offer insights and recommendations for a secure and enjoyable experience.

Please understand that weather conditions can change rapidly, and our decisions prioritize your safety and the safety of our guides. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in these situations, and we look forward to providing you with a safe and memorable experience on the waters of Southwest Florida.
