Why Kayak Near Sanibel Island?

Sanibel Island is a world-renowned destination for nature lovers, home to the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge and the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. If you're already drawn to Sanibel for its natural beauty, a guided kayak tour with Mike's Coastal Expeditions is the perfect complement to your barrier island experience.

While Sanibel offers kayak rentals from beach shops along Periwinkle Way, most of those put you in basic equipment on crowded waterways near the causeway. Our tours take you into a completely different ecosystem — the sheltered mangrove tunnels and tidal creeks of Estero Bay, where the paddling is calmer, the wildlife is more abundant, and the experience is far more intimate than what's available on-island.

Think of it as the difference between a self-guided walk and a deep-dive expedition. Our expert guides know every channel, every wildlife hotspot, and the best conditions for dolphin and manatee sightings. And our premium Hobie pedal-drive and Crescent kayaks are in a different league from the standard beach rentals you'll find on Sanibel.

Your Adventure Awaits

Whether you choose our premium Hobie pedal-drive kayaks for an effortless, hands-free experience or our high-quality Crescent paddle kayaks, every tour includes expert local guides, carbon fiber paddles, complimentary photos, and bottled water — all with no booking fees.

Our tours wind through mangrove tunnels where manatees rest in shallow waters, along oyster bars where dolphins feed, and out to secluded barrier island beaches. You'll paddle through Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve, one of Florida's first aquatic preserves, with a guide who knows every channel, every wildlife hotspot, and the best routes for the day's conditions.

We also offer sunset glow tours with LED-lit kayaks, clear kayak tours for underwater viewing, and stand-up paddle board options. Private and corporate group tours accommodate up to 100 guests.

Getting Here from Sanibel Island

Mike's Coastal Expeditions is approximately 35 minutes (28 miles) from Sanibel Island. Cross the Sanibel Causeway back to the mainland, then head south on Summerlin Road to US-41 (Tamiami Trail). Continue south through Estero into Bonita Springs and follow County Road 865 (Hickory Blvd) to our launch site at Big Hickory Island.

Alternatively, from the causeway you can take McGregor Boulevard south to US-41 for a scenic route. Free parking is available at our launch location.

Many Sanibel visitors plan a morning kayak tour with us and spend the afternoon back on-island exploring Ding Darling or shelling on Bowman's Beach — the best of both worlds.

Explore Sanibel Island & Kayak

A day that includes both Sanibel Island and a Mike's Coastal Expeditions tour is a nature lover's dream. Before or after your paddle, drive Wildlife Drive through the Ding Darling refuge for close-up views of herons, egrets, pelicans, and alligators. Visit the Shell Museum to learn about the barrier island's famous shelling beaches.

Sanibel's car-free bike paths are another highlight — rent bikes and ride the island's 25 miles of shared-use paths through subtropical landscapes. For dining, the island offers everything from casual seafood shacks to upscale waterfront restaurants.

Whether you're staying on Sanibel for a week or just visiting for the day, adding a guided kayak tour through Estero Bay's pristine mangroves gives you an experience that's less crowded and more wild than anything available on the island itself.
